Attitude
- This
is a discussion, presentation, and hands-on class. Students are expected
to read the assigned chapter before coming to class. Please come to class
prepared! It will benefit you and your fellow classmates.
- Feel
free to ask questions. There are no Silly questions. Your questions will
allow the instructor to clarify a concept for you and to help you learn
the course materials better.
Attendance
- Students
are expected to be on time. Excessive
lateness/tardiness will cost you one letter grade penalty.
- Attendance
is mandatory if you expect to do well in this course. Missing seven classes may result in expulsion from class with a
letter grade of F. Students with problems in this regard must
discuss them with the instructor at the beginning of the semester.
- Students
are responsible for all material covered in the lecture, and for the
reading and homework assignment. In the event of a class absence, students
are responsible for obtaining notes and assignments from fellow
classmates.
Class Attention
- Please
turn off audible cellular phones and pagers at the start of the class. This is a cell-phone free course!
A student who receives (or makes!) a cell phone call during class time
will be given a warning and asked to leave the class. Any student who
does this twice will lose their 5% class participation points.
- Laptop
usage in class is limited to taking notes for this class and in-class
exercises. Any other unauthorized usage will result in
negative impact on your grade: Each warning will result in
50% deduction of a letter grade.
Communications
- Office Hours: Students are
encouraged to schedule appointments to meet and talk with the instructor.
Meetings can be pre-arranged via emails.
- Email: Time-sensitive class
announcements will be sent via e-email throughout the semester. Students
are encouraged to check their UH email accounts on a daily basis.
Exams
- No
makeup midterm exams are allowed, unless consulted with, and approved by
the instructor prior to the exam (University policy will be followed
regarding the final exam). If you are unable to attend a scheduled midterm
exam, prior written notice must be provided to the instructor including
the reason for the absence.
- Excused
absences include, but are not limited to, death in the immediate family,
serious personal or immediate family illness resulting in hospitalization,
jury duty, and military service. Advance notice to the instructor is
required when possible. Documented proof substantiating the reason may be
required. The instructor reserves the right to determine excused absences.
- Announced
midterm exams missed due to an excused absence must be made up within one
week of returning to class for full credit or no credit will be given.
Exams missed due to an unexcused absence can not be made up.
Homework Assignments
- Assignments
are due at the beginning of class on the due day. Any assignment turned in
after that time on the same day will be considered late and will receive
half credit, after that NO CREDIT. The instructor reserves the right to
modify the assignment schedule as the need arises. Instructor will ensure
that students are given adequate notice and time.
- Homework
will be graded on its quality. Students may discuss material presented in
class with your colleagues but not the answers to the questions assigned
to you.
- Students
are expected to abide by the UH Student Conduct Code on “Academic Dishonesty”
presented below.
Academic
Dishonesty Policy
The
definition of academic misconduct is (a) cheating (using unauthorized
materials, information, or study aids in any academic exercise), plagiarism,
falsification of records, unauthorized possession of examinations,
intimidation, and any other actions that may improperly affect the evaluation
of the student’s academic performance or achievement; (b) assisting others in
such act; or (c) attempting to engage in such acts. For "suspected"
misconduct, the parties involved will get a zero for the exam, homework or
project. Any evidence of cheating will also be forwarded directly
to the university authorities for further investigation and punitive steps may
be pursued, possibly to the fullest extent of academic dishonesty punishment
(e.g., expelled from UH). Please find guidelines regarding Student
Conduct on http://www.hawaii.edu/student/conduct/imper.html
Plagiarism
Plagiarism
includes but is not limited to submitting, in fulfillment of an academic
requirement, any work that has been copied in whole or in part from another
individual's work without attributing that borrowed portion to the individual;
neglecting to identify as a quotation another's idea and particular phrasing
that was not assimilated into the student's language and style or paraphrasing
a passage so that the reader is misled as to the source; submitting the same
written or oral or artistic material in more than one course without obtaining
authorization from the instructors involved; or "drylabbing,"
which includes obtaining and using experimental data and laboratory write-ups
from other sections of a course or from previous terms. Furthermore, allowing
your work to be copied is also considered plagiarism, so guard your work to
prevent others from copying it. Any submitted work suspected of
plagiarism will be submitted to a powerful plagiarism detection software test:
Turnitin.com.
